AI readiness for SMEs: what to assess before buying tools

A practical readiness assessment spanning business value, process, data, security, governance and delivery capacity.

Readiness is broader than technical access

A licence and an API do not make an organisation AI-ready. The stronger starting point is a defined decision or workflow, a measurable baseline, usable information and an accountable owner.

Assess value, process stability, data sensitivity, integration effort, human oversight and the team that will operate the change. A weak score in any one dimension can overwhelm a promising use case.

A five-part SME assessment

Score business value, process readiness, data and technology readiness, governance and risk, and delivery capacity. Record the evidence behind each score rather than relying on optimism.

Select one bounded use case with a visible owner and outcome. This creates a safer learning loop than buying an enterprise-wide tool and hoping adoption follows.

What a decision-ready output looks like

A useful readiness exercise ends with a prioritised opportunity, risks and dependencies, a controlled pilot, success measures and a stop decision. It should be clear what must be true before the organisation spends more.
